I’m in London this week for the kick off of the Webby’s People’s Voice Awards sponsored by .Org.
Almost every time I’ve said “.Org” someone has responded, “Oh great, which one?” The answer is the interesting thing; the “.Org” I mean, and the one making this event happen, is actually an “org”anization unto itself as a division of the Public Interest Registry (the organization that more or less runs the internet). The group is now behind a global effort to make sure that any nonprofit, NGO, or otherwise-do-gooder has a special place on the internet and that the rest of the world knows about what CEO Alexa Raad had dubbed the internet’s “social conscience.”
Last night, Green Peace, Wikipedia, Idealist (read: me), the Salvation Army and VideoLAN spoke at a media event (for the PV kickoff) about the problems they are solving and incredible work happening in the .Org space - followed by a press conference and interviews with the BBC, Global Vision, PBS, etc.
Now I am as often as not someone that can (or will) poke holes in PR and marketing campaigns that are so broad I feel it’s hard to do much with. (Al Gore’s latest $300M effort comes to mind). In this case though, I feel it’s a case of “a rising tide lifts all boats,” and it’s exciting to be part of their work. There is sparse (if any) opportunity for NGOs and social enterprises to be recognized as a whole by the media and this was an extraordinary start at bringing diverse online groups together to recognize the value they are adding (as a collective) to society and to the web - without necessarily raking in .com-like dollars (not that there’s anything wrong with raking in some dollars for the right reasons ;-))
Hats off to the folks at The Webby Awards, PIR and .Org, and especially Name.com for sponsoring Idealist to be there!
