Biofuels: A Clean Energy Scam?

The Clean Energy Scam

Without giving my own personal views yet, I’d really love to know others thoughts on it and get some discussion going.   I know some of you are ardent biofuel supporters.  Some of you have even raised vast sums of money to invest in biofuel infrastructure.

Some of the comments on Current were good, but I think you guys are smarter.

Biofuels, in general, still have great potential to be a part of improving our energy mix, but corn ethanol is definitely not one of the strongest candidates. In fact, it’s probably one of the weakest, for all the reasons mentioned in the articles (and a few more.)

The concept of cellulosic biofuels is a bit more promising because ag waste that is typically burned can be turned into energy, but I think the process is still being developed and isn’t quite efficient on a large scale.

In general, the tricky thing about biofuels is that if we are using crops to produce energy, we are displacing land that can be used for food, which might add to rising food prices. http://www.reuters.com/article/email/idUSN2533909020080331

It seems counterproductive to try to lower energy prices if the consequences include raising food prices…
