Twitter-ous Virtues

<script type=”text/javascript” src=”http://shots.snap.com/ss/95f0dc342a26c3da87727767b468a6ff/snap_shots.js”></script> I’ve had a couple different conversations/arguments about Twitter in the last few weeks - both online and off. I will admit, I was once adamantly averse to tweeting as I saw it mostly as a big time waster. Then I went to SXSW.

At SXSW I saw how it could be used not only for all the things that I suspected: “Eating pizza, having beer with @myfriendX!” but also interesting and immediately useful updates to a large audience. …Even a flash mob-esque revolt when something wasn’t seen as very good. I saw twitters like “Session on alternate reality games inspired new idea for Facebook app! anyone want to help build?” or “Best link for RSS feeds on public service _URL_” or even socially “don’t wase time with X party. All of us heading to Y” and “Moby playing impromptu show at _(bar)_.”

Since getting back to DC Twitter has been both a fun and useful way to keep up with friends around the country, and I’ve seen it as much more valuable than time wasting. I’ve learned of new websites, ideas, great informative blog posts, and events because of it and even learned new words and been ahead of the news in one case! (and yes, have also started planning a coordinated public Rick Roll-ing)

At the end of the day, I think it mostly boils down to who you follow/who your friends are. Keep good company = get good tweets.

I like my friends a lot. Thanks, guys! I like not only knowing your brilliant ideas, but also about the tofudog and soft-serve ice cream you had for lunch on Friday.

Other good or bad experiences with Twitter? Questions or thoughts from people who just don’t get it?
