Your Water Footprint. Yes, You Have a Big One.

March 21st, 2008 · 2 Comments

Another great 5 Minutes of Caring this morning from CoolPeopleCare:

“Tomorrow is World Water Day, and while it’s a time to realize the dire need for clean water around the world, it’s also a time to take a look at our own consumption. Do you know how much water is in that coffee cup of yours? Would you have guessed more than 100 gallons? That’s right - the processes by which our needs and wants get to us can often be a drain on a water supply half a world away. This weekend, make mindful consumer choices that ensure a smaller water footprint, thereby protecting water supplies in other countries.”

I, ironically, read this while taking a big swig from my 20 oz coffee at my desk this morning.  It might only be 20 oz on my desk, but it took well over 200 liters of water to get here.  Makes you think.

For better or worse, I’m not likely to forgo my morning cup o’ joe, but what are some of the things we can do about it?

Talk of the Nation, March 21, 2008 · Saturday, March 22 is annual World Water Day, a tradition started by the United Nations in the early 1990s. This year’s World Water Day will focus on sanitation issues, as part of a larger project headed by the UN.
